CONGRESS MEETS BASIC RESPONSIBILITY, NOW MUST ADDRESS DEBT AND SPENDING

CR Agreement Sets Stage For “Serious Discussion” On Entitlement Reform, Debt Reduction

WASHINGTON – American Action Forum President Doug Holtz-Eakin issued the following statement in response to the bipartisan agreement on the Continuing Resolution for 2011:
“Keeping the government open and functioning is a basic responsibility of Congress and the President, so I applaud members of both parties for finally coming together in the eleventh hour to clear this low bar,” Holtz-Eakin said. “As the debate over the 2012 budget begins, I urge Congress to take a hard look at the federal government’s current and future sea of red ink.  I hope the bipartisan agreement on this Continuing Resolution will be a starting point for a more serious discussion about fundamental entitlement reform and reducing our debt in the long-term. It’s easy to resort to demagoguery and pot shots, but it takes courage to propose a real solution to our spending problems. The American people are looking for leadership, not political posturing.”
