AAF Releases Primer On Trade Promotion Authority
The American Action Forum (@AAF) released a primer detailing the foundation of trade promotion authority (TPA) and current developments. Currently, there is a bipartisan effort to renew TPA so that U.S. trade officials can complete current trade negotiations.
TPA is a cooperative tool between the legislative and executive branches to facilitate free trade agreements with foreign governments.
There are three key elements to TPA that ensure the agreements implement the objectives of Congress: outlining Congress’s trade policy priorities and negotiating objectives, consultation with and notification to Congress on ongoing negotiations, and defining terms that must be met for the administration to enter into trade agreements.
