“Sue and Settle” Practices Have Cost Taxpayers $67.9 Billion

Today the American Action Forum (@AAF) released an analysis of the EPA’s new “sue and settle” directive. The analysis finds that from 2005 through 2016, 23 sue and settle regulations have resulted in a total cost burden of $67.9 billion, with $26.5 billion in annual costs. It concludes that with these numbers in mind, EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt’s recent directive is a step in the right direction and can help rein in the out-of-control costs brought about by the sue and settle practice.

Additionally, AAF released an analysis looking at the House’s “Sunshine for Regulations and Regulatory Decrees and Settlements Act of 2017” (H.R. 469).  The analysis found that, much like the recent EPA directive, H.R. 469 has the potential to save a considerable amount of taxpayer money by putting an end to sue and settle practices across all agencies.
