The Regulatory Impact of a Green New Deal

With advocacy groups and some members of Congress pushing for a “Green New Deal” package, AAF’s Director of Regulatory Policy Dan Bosch examines what regulations would be required for one such proposal. He further estimates the cost, as far as possible.

Key findings include:

  • The Green New Deal, as proposed by the progressive group Data for Progress, would require the full implementation of previously finalized rules, the expansion of existing regulatory powers, and legislation creating new regulatory authority;
  • These regulations would likely require at least $1 trillion in new regulatory costs, if not much more; and
  • The timeline for implementing these regulations would be difficult for businesses, Congress, or a presidential administration to meet.
